Timo Werner sends title warning to Chelsea after conceding three vs Southampton

Chelsea held by Southampton

Chelsea played host to Southampton on Saturday afternoon, in a 3 pm kick-off.

The Blues headed into the tie on the back of a 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

However, with both Thiago Silva and Edouard Mendy absent, Chelsea’s backline once again looked shaky.

The Londoners went 2-0 up inside half an hour, courtesy of a Timo Werner brace.

However, some questionable defending on the part of the hosts, and Kepa in particular, allowed Southampton to draw level with just under an hour played.

Kai Havertz fired Chelsea back into the lead just a few minutes later, as Frank Lampard’s men looked set to hold on for all three points.

However, in injury-time, Jannik Vestergaard went on to rescue a share of the spoils for the visitors.

Werner’s warning to Chelsea

Saturday’s result marked the 2nd time that Chelsea have conceded three goals in a single game this term.

The Blues have one of the worst defensive records of the sides currently in the top half of the Premier League table, a shortcoming they of course also struggled with last season.

And, following his side’s latest collapse, Timo Werner has sent something of a warning to his Chelsea teammates.

When discussing the Londoners’ defensive issues, the German voiced the opinion that it is backlines which win titles, and if Chelsea continue to leak goals at their current rate, they look destined to come up short:

“I don’t know if we have a problem but in the end the last three games we concede six goals and that’s not where we want to be,” he said.

“I think we are Chelsea, we want to battle for titles.

“In the end think it’s not the offence that wins titles. In Germany we always say defence wins titles. I think that’s true.

“When we concede so many goals in every game then it’s hard to win games but in the end also to win titles.

“I think we have to work in it because six goals in three games is too much. I think we have to be better in this.”
