Timo Werner labels Frank Lampard ‘main’ reason behind ‘dream’ Chelsea move

Incoming Chelsea signing Timo Werner has opened up on the key role played by Frank Lampard in his decision to join the Blues, as well as the budding relationship between the pair.

Chelsea switch

Following weeks of rampant speculation, Werner’s Stamford Bridge switch was finally made official on the 18th of June.

Despite long-standing links with Premier League rivals Liverpool, the German attacker opted to link up with Frank Lampard’s outfit, with Werner set to join forces with fellow Blues signing Hakim Ziyech to form a potentially lethal frontline in southwest London next season.

Werner’s Premier League move comes with the versatile attacker having enjoyed another scintillating campaign in 2019/20, during which he racked up 34 goals and 10 assists across all competitions.

‘The main point’

As such, ahead of a season which could see their new hitman serviced by a combination of the aforementioned Ziyech and rumoured target Kai Havertz, Chelsea’s fans have understandably already made clear their excitement regarding Werner’s potential impact at the club.

And, if the German’s latest comments are anything to go by, then Werner appears to be equally as eager to get his English adventure underway.

Speaking in an interview with his new club’s official website earlier today, the 24-year-old was drawn on a range of topics, including his decision to make the move to Stamford Bridge.

And, in response, Werner explained:

‘When you have a decision to go from your old club and you come to a big club like this, it was for me a dream which came true because Chelsea is a very big club.’

‘I know of the players before when they won the Champions League with [Didier] Drogba, with my new manager Frank Lampard, Petr Cech as the technical advisor, it is like a little dream for me but I want to become, not the same player as them, but I want to be part of a new era here so I will try to give my best.’

‘The style of the Premier League is very fast and my speciality is that I am really fast so I think it is perfect for me to play here.’

The prolific attacker, however, went on to reveal that not even the lure of playing for one of Europe’s top clubs proved as telling in his eventual choice to join Chelsea as the influence of Frank Lampard.

Werner continued:

‘He [Lampard] was the main point.’

‘We talked a lot about things like the system, how he wants to play and sees me playing, and how the system fits me.’

‘He is a really nice guy who not only told me what he wants from me as a player because he wants to help me as a guy.’

‘He knows me now a little bit better and it fits very well between us and now I am happy to be here.’
