Citing “family reasons” for his decision, the Arsenal legend has returned to London to be closer to his loved ones. As a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the travel restrictions it has brought, Henry has been unable to see his children for over a year, and has therefore decided to leave his role ahead of the start of the new MLS season.
The Frenchman had taken over at Montreal in November of 2019, after being sacked by Monaco. He enjoyed a far more productive time in Canada, making the play-offs in his first season. Prior to caretaker Jonathan Woodgate taking the manager’s job at Bournemouth until the end of the season, Henry was considered one of the favourites for the role.
Henry gives thanks
Henry provided a statement, saying:
“It is with a heavy heart that I’ve decided to take this decision. The last year has been an extremely difficult one for me personally. Due to the worldwide pandemic, I was unable to see my children. Unfortunately due to the ongoing restrictions and the fact that we will have to relocate to the US again for several months will be no different. The separation is too much of a strain for me and my kids. Therefore, it is with much sadness that I must take the decision to return to London and leave CF Montreal.”
He also thanked the fans, players and staff of the club, and concluded: “Thank you all for being there on this journey and I wish you all the success for the future.”

Henry’s future could yet be in England, possibly with Bournemouth, depending on where the Cherries finish this season.
