Thiago provides fitness update on himself ahead of Liverpool’s Premier League opener vs Norwich

Norwich vs Liverpool

Liverpool will kick off their Premier League campaign a week from today.

The Reds are set to face off with newly-promoted Norwich City at Carrow Road, at 5:30 PM UK time on Saturday, August 14th.

Coincidentally, Liverpool also got their title-winning 2019/20 campaign underway with a clash versus Norwich, which they won.

As such, Jurgen Klopp’s side will no doubt be hoping for a similar outcome this time around, following their fairly dismal title defence last time out.

Thiago’s injury update

Ahead of the new season getting underway, Thiago Alcantara has this weekend been speaking about his injury issues.

The Spaniard did not enjoy the most spectacular debut campaign in England. But part of the reason for this may have been a previous injury he had picked up.

Speaking during an interview on Saturday, Thiago discussed how he started the 2020/21 season with an issue around his hamstring that was never fully fixed, with the problem having become more and more pressing as the campaign wore on:

“The last season I started with – from a long time before that – some pain up there in the hamstring, between the glutes, old pain. I was never clean to play because I was always with that pain and there’s a point during the end of the last season that I started to feel [it] more and more.

“And with the national team, even I couldn’t sprint in some terms, I couldn’t do some actions.”

However, since returning from Euro 2020, Thiago has been working with the medical team at Anfield to solve his fitness woes:

“So I try to start the pre-season, always in agreement with the medical team, to [do] individual work to clean the area a bit more and to be without more pain.

“So we are at that point now that we try to take it out and, at the same point, to stay with the team.”

The former Bayern Munich star concluded by suggesting that he should be fit and ready to feature versus Norwich on opening day:

“Sure. I think we will try to reach the first game of the season, for sure.”
