“There is a fight on” – Southgate makes England no.1 spot claim

“There is a fight on” – Southgate makes England no.1 spot claim

England squad announced

Gareth Southgate has today announced his 25-man England squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino.

The Three Lions head into the games knowing that 4 points will be enough to see them qualify for the World Cup, due to be held in Qatar, in 12 months’ time, although Poland wait in the wings should Harry Kane and co. slip up in their final assignments.

And while there was plenty of controversy surrounding who Southgate named as outfield players in the 25-man panel, the three goalkeepers largely picked themselves.

Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale and Sam Johnstone all retained their spots from the last international break.

But who is no.1?

Of course, Aaron Ramsdale has been in brilliant form for club side Arsenal, helping the Gunners go 9 games unbeaten across all competitions with some fabulous saves, whilst his distribution has caught the eye, too.

The whole package was enough to see him nominated for Player of the Month for October, and the former Sheffield United man will be the first goalkeeper since 2016 to win the award, should he do so.

Southgate, too, was full of praise, saying:

“This is the third squad he has been in, we were impressed in the summer. He has started well at Arsenal, still a small sample of games and distribution with his feet is a bonus with the way they play at Arsenal. There is a fight on (to be number one).”

Ramsdale is well versed in fighting for the no.1 spot, of course, having taken just three games to displace Bernd Leno in the Arsenal goal over the summer. Will he prove as successful in front of Gareth Southgate?
