Messi leaves Barcelona after spending his whole career at the Catalan club, amassing 38 trophies and six Ballon d’Ors on his way to becoming recognised as one of, if not the, greatest player ever. His pain at the decision, which ultimately was out of his hands, was evident during his final press conference, where he broke down in tears before he even began speaking.
PSG’s plan for Messi
Messi and the number ten shirt are synonymous to an entire generation of football fans, much like Cristiano Ronaldo and the number 7 shirt. However, this shirt is currently occupied in Paris, by Messi’s former teammate Neymar. Although reports suggested that the Brazilian offered Messi the jersey, the Argentine has allegedly declined.
Instead, as per Spanish outlet Marca, Messi has been offered the number 30 shirt, which he wore for his Barcelona debut. Alternatively, the number 19, which Messi wore for several seasons at the Camp Nou, has been touted.
Although the shirt number is usually reserved for goalkeepers in Ligue 1, Messi’s arrival could be set to change that, with the Argentine superstar sure to inspire others to choose the rogue shirt number.
