The pros & cons of picking soon-to-be Manchester United star Jadon Sancho in FPL

Man United to sign Sancho

The biggest news to emerge for the 2021 summer transfer window so far, of course, involves Jadon Sancho.

Manchester United confirmed at the beginning of July that they had agreed a deal in principle with Borussia Dortmund for the winger.

The transfer will reportedly set United back £73m, making Sancho the club’s third-most expensive player ever, behind Paul Pogba and Harry Maguire.

Sancho is also expected to officially become a United player within the next couple of days:

Sancho’s arrival is a big boost for Man United as they look to put an end to Manchester City’s reign on dominance over the English top-flight.

But the winger signing for United also throws up an interesting debate for those who play Fantasy Premier League.

Sancho’s price is yet to be confirmed as he is not yet officially a United player. But that deal is expected to be done soon, opening up the debate of whether or not you should add Sancho to your FPL side.

101 have taken a look at the pros and cons of signing Sancho below.

Pros of signing Sancho

Starting with the pros, the main one, of course, is his goal contribution record for Borussia Dortmund.

During 2020/21, Sancho scored 16 and assisted a further 20 in 38 outings across all competitions for BVB.

The season before that saw Sancho find the net 20 times and provide a further 20 assists in 44 games for Dortmund.

A similar return for Man United in his first season would make Sancho one of the highest-scoring midfield assets on FPL next year, which is of course a huge plus.

The second reason you should look to sign Sancho is due to his versatility.

Many people associate Sancho with the right-wing spot, and this is likely to be his most prominent position for Man United as they do lack quality depth in this area.

However, Sancho is also very capable of playing on the left flank. He has done this many times throughout his career and has actually proven to be a more lethal goalscorer when used in this role.

And, with there being talk of Marcus Rashford missing the early stages of 2021/22 due to him undergoing surgery, Sancho could well be used in this role at the start of the season for United.

Finally, another reason you may wish to sign Sancho is due to United’s fixture scheduling.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have a decent opening to the campaign, which sees them face Leeds United, Southampton, Wolves, Newcastle and West Ham. All of these games are, on paper, ties United should be able to win.

The Red Devils then have something of a nightmare period from October to December, which you may want to sell Sancho for.

However, you then really need him back from the start of gameweek 15:

Cons of signing Sancho

Whilst there are a number of pros to signing Sancho, there are also a couple of cons you may want to consider.

The most obvious is that, whilst Sancho has excelled in the Bundesliga, he has zero Premier League experience.

This, obviously, does not mean that Sancho will be a complete flop at United. But Timo Werner and Kai Havertz should be a reminder that not every player coming to the PL for the first time hits the ground running.

Werner, for example, scored 28 and assisted eight in 34 Bundesliga games in 2019/20. Last term at Chelsea, however, Werner would net just six and assist 12 in 35 league games.

This is not to say Sancho will be a disaster at Old Trafford, but he may take a few months to adapt.

Elsewhere, though not confirmed yet, Sancho’s price may be a con. If FPL opt to base his price around his Dortmund form, he could prove to be one of the most expensive midfield options, which may limit your ability to sign players such as Mohamed Salah and Bruno Fernandes.

Finally, one potential con of signing Sancho may be that most FPL players sign him just because of the hype around him.

This would mean that having him in your side would unlikely let you gain ground on FPL players as everyone is benefiting from his displays.
