The one reason Ross Barkley didn’t leave Chelsea this summer

The one reason Ross Barkley didn’t leave Chelsea this summer

Chelsea’s summer clear-out

While the major incomings at Stamford Bridge this summer were Belgian forward Romelu Lukaku, third-choice goalkeeper Marcus Bettinelli and a loan for Saul Niguez, the club had great success with outgoings.

Chelsea sold a wide array of youth talent, as well as first team names Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Tammy Abraham, for a combined total of well over 120 million pounds. In the cases of Tino Livramento and several other youth products, buy back clauses have been inserted into the deals, evidence of further clever forward-thinking from the blues.

Barkley’s wages a major stumbling block

One player who failed to depart, however, was Ross Barkley.

The 27-year-old joined the west London outfit in 2018 for a reported fee of 15 million pounds, but has flattered to deceive for the Blues, providing 11 goals and 11 assists in mostly substitute appearances under a wide array of managers.

As a result, he spent last campaign on loan with Aston Villa, where he went on to make 24 appearances, but scored just 3 times and provided 1 assist. While the midfielder promised much, he ultimately delivered little.

Barkley will seemingly be given the chance to face his former club this evening in the Carabao Cup, but why is he still at Chelsea?

As per Goal, it was the England international’s wages that proved the major stumbling block facing interested clubs this summer. With Barkley currently earning around £120,000 per week, Nizaar Kinsella reports:

“Clubs such as Burnley and West Brom were reluctant to pay even a small portion of his £120,000-a-week wages”

With financial constraints effecting all clubs, especially those outside of the English “big six”, a salary of over 6 million pounds on a man who is yet to rediscover his Everton form represents a massive gamble.
