“The most important thing for me is to be on the pitch” Arsenal new boy Sambi Lokonga reveals his favourite position and what has surprised him the most since joining the club

Sambi impresses in red and white

Arsenal added promising midfield talent Albert Sambi Lokonga to their ranks as part of their summer rebuild, prising the Belgian midfielder away from Anderlecht.

He has hit the ground running too, impressing Arsenal fans in pre-season and being one of the only shining lights in the Gunners’ disappointing defeat to Chelsea in matchday 2.

With Thomas Partey and Granit Xhaka both likely ahead of Lokonga in the Arsenal pecking order, and Mikel Arteta’s desire to ultimately move to a 4-3-3 formation, the Belgian could need to be patient for his opportunities. Still just 21 years old, however, he has time on his side.

Lokonga reveals what has surprised him the most at Arsenal

Speaking on the official Arsenal twitch channel, Lokonga has continued to endear himself to Arsenal fans.

Asked about his favoured position, Lokonga revealed that he prefers playing further forward, saying:

“I like to be 8 so I can attack and I can defend with more freedom, that’s what I like. But I also like [playing as] six so it’s difficult. I like both but the most important thing for me is to be on the pitch”

The last sentence, in particular, will be music to Arsenal fans’ ears, with players keen to represent the club in seemingly short supply in recent weeks.

Lokonga also revealed what has surprised him most in the Arsenal dressing room since joining, and offered another endearing answer, revealing that:

“It’s how the people are humble, you know. They are at a big club like Arsenal but they are so humble and they are so nice. I think everyone in the world needs to be like this, to be humble and to look after the guy next to him, and I think that’s what I like”

Following years of perceived attitude problems at the club, this will come as a welcome revelation to Gunners fans.

Could Lokonga go on to cement himself in Arsenal’s midfield?
