The likelihood of Callum Wilson playing vs Sheffield United
Wilson out as Carroll steps up
Newcastle were hit with a double barrel of bad news yesterday, as, after being knocked out of the FA Cup by Arsenal, confirmation arrived that Callum Wilson is struggling for fitness.
Wilson has proven an excellent attacking option since signing from Bournemouth in the summer, and without him in their line-up, the Magpies have looked slightly toothless. Record signing Joelinton has never looked like being prolific since arriving from the Bundesliga.
Steve Bruce provided the following update regarding Wilson’s fitness:
“Purely precaution. Hopefully, we’ll leave it with the medical people, and be ready for Tuesday,” said the Newcastle boss.

The word ‘hopefully’ may not fill too many Newcastle fans with confidence, but they will take solace in the fact that his replacement, Andy Carroll, had a good game against Arsenal on Saturday, and was unlucky not to score on a couple of occasions:
“I thought Andy did fantastically well. If he had topped it off by scoring a goal, it would have been good for him,” said Bruce. “There were a lot of pleasing things. We’ve had a tough run of fixtures, but we dust ourselves down and go again.”
Sheffield United goals
Newcastle taking on Sheffield United without Wilson would give the game an intriguing narrative. The lowest scorers in the Premier League under Chris Wilder looked in better attacking form in their 3rd-round victory over Bristol Rovers.
Goals from Ollie Burke – his first for the club – and Jaydon Bogle could see Wilder reconsider who to hand a start to versus the Magpies. The signing of Rhian Brewster is yet to pay dividends, and the Blades have scored just 8 goals all season.
“We needed a win because of the form and results – we needed that for the players and for the football club,” Chris Wilder explained.
“I put out as strong a selection as I could. It’s not a huge game for a lot of people outside this football club, but a big win for us and for the supporters.”
Bogle’s fine goal was one which no doubt left Blades fans wondering where such free-flowing style has been all season, and will bring hope that the Premier League relegation favourites could pick up some points in the near future.
What a move this is.
