The latest on Danny Ings & James Ward-Prowse ahead of Southampton vs Burnley

Southampton vs Burnley

Sunday’s Premier League action kicks off in the South East of England as Southampton play host to Burnley.

The Saints head into proceedings on a pretty woeful run of form, losing four of their last five league outings.

Said dip has seen Southampton move down to 14th in the Premier league table and to within seven points of the drop.

Granted, relegation does seem very unlikely with just nine games left to play, but Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are not safe just yet.

Burnley are also sat on 33 points from 29 games played. The Clarets, though, have been in much better form than the Saints, losing just one of their last five.

The latest on Danny Ings ahead of Burnley

So, Southampton will no doubt be desperate to field as strong a squad as possible on Sunday to get one over on Sean Dyche and co.

One player who the Southampton faithful were no doubt eager to have back on Sunday is Danny Ings.

The forward would pick up an injury 13 minutes into Southampton’s victory over Sheffield United at the beginning of March and he has been on the sidelines since.

When speaking to the media ahead of Burnley, Ralph Hasenhuttl would provide an update on his star striker, confirming both he and Theo Walcott are training and in contention:

“These guys are training now with the team for more than one week.

“They are on a good way back, we can feel that there are more and more players coming back, so this is good news.

“Especially the last two weeks we had a very good time with the guys that have stayed here, a few good sessions, and most of them did a good job. I was happy with the attitude and the workload.”

Hasenhüttl’s did, however, confirm that James Ward-Prowse has a calf issue:

“Prowsey had a little bit of problems with his calf, so he missed the third [England] game, and he is still not training.

“Also today we rest him, but hopefully tomorrow he is so far so good and he can train with the team and be an option for the weekend.”
