The Europa Conference League: Who can qualify, when is it and what English sides could be involved?

The Europa Conference League

2021/22 will see the Europa Conference League premiered for the first time.

The competition is a third-tier tournament that will take place on Thursday evenings alongside the Europa League, which will be reduced to 32 sides from next campaign.

With so much football already taking place in midweek and plenty of teams already taking part in both the Champions League and Europa League, some may wonder why we need a third European club tournament.

Well, according to UEFA, the aim of the competition is to give more clubs in more countries a chance to participate in European football:

Who is in the Europa Conference League?

But who are we likely to see in the tournament?

With the competition ranked below the Europa League and CL, and aiming to give more countries/clubs a chance at European football, we will of course be seeing some lesser-known sides competing.

However, clubs who finish sixth in Spain, Italy and Germany and 5th in France will be entered into the competition next term.

As for the Premier League, they will see either 7th place or the winner of the League Cup put into the ECL.

Should Manchester City win the League Cup, they will of course play no part as they have already secured CL football. But if Tottenham win the cup and do not finish in the top-six, they will be England’s appointed side for the tournament next year.

Jose Mourinho has also recently discussed the Europa Conference League:

“If the dimension and prestige of the club is bigger than level or the prestige of any competition then I still feel it is the responsibility of the club to respect the competition and to bring the prestige that at that moment the competition does not have.”
