West Ham 3 – Southampton 0
Leaving the Michail Antonio injury to one side, it was a brilliant weekend for West Ham United.
Sufferers for so much of the season, Hammers fans would have been forgiven for ‘bricking it’ before kick off against Southampton.
Facing a relegation six-pointer against a chief rival, West Ham’s last match ended in a 3-0 defeat to Burnley, sprinkled with grim scenes of pitch invasions and fans chanting at the board.
But West Ham fans shouldn’t have worried. Southampton were appalling in the first half at the London Stadium, and the Irons took full advantage.
Inter Milan loanee Joao Mario opened the scoring, before Marko Arnautovic bagged a brace.
The win lifted West Ham to 14th, with 33 points from 31 games. The Hammers are five points clear of Southampton and the bottom three.
West Ham return to Premier League action next weekend when they take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the derby.
Chelsea lost 2-1 to Tottenham on Sunday.
