Tariq Lamptey signs new long-term deal at Brighton ending Arsenal speculation as Gunners switch targets
Lamptey signs new deal
Whilst Brighton’s season may not be going exactly to plan with them sitting just a few mere points above the relegation zone, the good news has begun to come in as highly-rated young right back Tariq Lamptey has signed a new contract with the club less than a year after signing on with the Seagulls.
Coming through the Chelsea youth academy, he made his debut for the Blues in the 2019/20 season but left Frank Lampard’s team after the option of Reece James blocked the route into the senior set-up for many seasons to come. It appears though Lamptey has made the right choice and has flourished since his moved to the south coast.
Graham Potter has spoken of his ecstasy regarding the signing of the new deal and knows the quality that the young right back possesses.
“We are delighted to see Tariq commit his long-term future here. We knew his potential when we signed him a year ago, and hoped he would have a really positive impact on the club, and that has proved to be the case with his performances since June,” he said.
😁 Albion are delighted to confirm that Tariq Lamptey has signed a new contract committing his future to the club until June 2025!

“He has been the model professional, he works exceptionally hard, is a humble lad and is a team player. He fits in with everything we would want from a player, now it’s about helping him reach his potential.”
Lamptey is currently out at the moment with an injury which has left Graham Potter with several issues regarding selection and no orthodox right-back to move into his place. Different combinations of Joel Veltman and Ben White have been used in his place and he will be desperate for positive news regarding Lamptey and his injury in the coming weeks.
Arsenal miss out
Whilst the news of a contract comes as a positive for Brighton, it will not be so for Arsenal who had the young 20-year old fall back on their radar. Although Arsenal have invested in a right sided fullback, with Southampton’s Cedric coming in on a permanent deal in the summer after arriving on loan in the winter window of 2020, ultimately more quality is needed to provide competition for Spanish international Hector Bellerin.
Bellerin himself has been linked with moves to the likes of PSG and Barcelona, and there are no guarantees that he will remain at the club beyond the current season.

This means now that Arsenal may be looking to strengthen in that area and will need now to switch targets. The right hand side is not the only issue that Arsenal have with Kieran Tierney suffering a minor injury ahead of their 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace. Ainsley Maitland-Niles was the man who came in for the Scottish international but had a difficult match.
He was ultimately substituted and Bukayo Saka was tasked with remaining in the left back role for the remainder of the match. Sead Kolasinac joined his former club Schalke on loan until the end of the season which has left Arsenal with no natural left-footed options on that side. They could choose to dip into the January window though and strengthen before the end of the month.
