Stoke City confirm first signing of January window

Premier League outfit Stoke City have this afternoon confirmed the signing of defender Moritz Bauer from Russian side Rubin Kazan.

Career path

Bauer, a lightning-quick 25-year-old right-back, first broke onto the professional scene in Switzerland with Grasshopper Club Zurich back in 2011.

He went on to spend 5 seasons in the Swiss Super League, before being snapped up by Rubin Kazan in the summer of 2016.

Bauer went from strength to strength during his time in the Russian top-flight, appearing 21 times in the league last season, before becoming an absolute mainstay for Kazan to this point in the current campaign.

Done deal

And the FC Winterthur youth product’s showings in the tough climate of Russian football have today earned him a move to England, with Stoke City having confirmed the signing of the twice-capped Austrian international this afternoon.

Bauer has put pen to paper on a four-and-a-half year deal at the Bet365 Stadium for an undisclosed fee, thought to be in the region of £5 million:

Alternative

Stoke were known to be in the market for full-back reinforcements this month, with the confirmation that they have sealed a deal for Bauer coming on the back of news that another of their defensive targets, in the form of Fulham stopper Ryan Fredericks, is set to join Swansea.
