Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard was quick to lavish praise on Ashley Young, on the back of his side’s downing of Brighton & Hove Albion this afternoon.

The Gerrard era of course got underway at Villa Park earlier today.

After an alarming slip down the Premier League table culminated in Dean Smith being sent on his way ahead of the international break, the Claret and Blue swooped decisively to lure ex-Liverpool midfielder Gerrard to the club from Rangers.

The first test in Stevie G’s Villa adventure came in the form of a Premier League showdown with high-flying Brighton & Hove Albion.

And to say that the 41-year-old navigated Saturday’s proceedings in impressive fashion would be putting it lightly.

A solid all-round display ultimately culminated in Aston Villa emerging on the right side of a 2-0 scoreline, owing to strikes from both Ollie Watkins and Tyrone Mings inside the closing ten minutes.


In turn, on the back of an altogether positive day’s work coming to a close at Villa Park, it should come as little surprise to hear of a host of the club’s stars being singled out for praise.

What did mark a shock, though, was the identity of the player deemed to have ‘changed the game’ after being introduced off the bench fifteen minutes from time.

The man in question? Ashley Young.

Veteran Young played an absolutely crucial role in ensuring that the Gerrard era got off to a positive start on Saturday, excelling in his late substitute cameo, and even teeing up Watkins’ opener:

And such exploits have since culminated in deserved praise on the part of his new boss, too, with Gerrard having labelled the 36-year-old ‘outstanding’ during his post-match media duties this evening:
