Steven Gerrard heaps praise on Arsenal after ousting Slavia Prague from Europe: ‘I was proud’

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard has moved to reveal his appreciation for Arsenal’s display en route to thumping Slavia Prague on Thursday.

Laca at the double

The Gunners were of course back in European action 24 hours ago.

Arteta and co. made the trip to the Czech capital, for the 2nd of two Europa League quarter-final meetings with the aforementioned Slavia.

The tie sat on a knife-edge ahead of kick-off, with a last-gasp equaliser having handed the Czechs the advantage following last week’s opener in north London.

When all was said and done on Thursday, though, Arsenal went on to showcase their superiority, and in some style.

A scintillating opening to the action saw the visitors race out to a 3-0 advantage inside the opening 25 minutes at the Eden Arena. After Nicolas Pepe set the Gunners on their way, Alexandre Lacazette and Bukayo Saka quickly followed up, to leave a shell-shocked Slavia on the ropes:

And there was even time for the in-form Lacazette to add some gloss to the scoreline with a late 4th, as the north Londoners kept alive their hunt for Champions League football in stellar fashion.

‘Loved everything about it’

One individual, meanwhile, who appeared to garner particular pleasure from the dominant manner of Arsenal’s display on Thursday, was Steven Gerrard.

Gerrard’s Rangers were of course knocked out of the Europa League by Slavia, amid grim scenes which eventually resulted in Ondrej Kudela being slapped with a 10-match ban, for racially abusing Gers’ star Glen Kamara.

Kamara is actually formerly of Arsenal, with the Gunners, in turn, having been widely hailed for their public backing of the midfielder ahead of kick-off in Prague:

And Gerrard has since backed such praise, revealing his admiration for everything from Arsenal’s pre-match actions, to their performance, to further messages of support for Kamara following the full-time whistle:

‘I loved everything about the game. I loved the Arsenal performance, the way they went about it. I admired how they approached before the game, during the game, and after the game. I’m sure Glen did as well.’

The former Liverpool captain continued:

‘I was really proud watching Arsenal’s performance last night. Everything about it, the way they prepared for the game, the way the manager spoke, the way the players behaved before, during and after, and then to back it up with that level of performance, I sat there are really enjoyed that performance. I thought it was sensational.’
