Steven Gerrard dealt blow in latest transfer reunion attempt at Aston Villa

Coutinho impresses

Philippe Coutinho was reunited with Steven Gerrard once more as he joined Aston Villa on loan from Barcelona for the rest of the season, the pair having been teammates at Liverpool.

And, making his Villa debut against Manchester United, the Brazilian repaid the faith shown in him by Gerrard.

Coming on at 2-0 down, Coutinho provided an assist for the first Villa goal, before scrambling home the equaliser late in the piece, as Villa Park quickly fell in love with their new loanee.

And with Gerrard’s connections, there followed rumours that Luis Suarez could be the latest former teammate to join the new Villa boss this January.

However, such efforts may have hit something of a dead end.

Suarez not joining Villa

Perhaps unsurprisingly, it has emerged that Luis Suarez will not be joining Aston Villa this January.

This, however, is through no fault of the player.

As per

“Atletico Madrid will not allow Luis Suarez to leave in the current transfer window, despite reports linking the Uruguayan with a sensational return to the Premier League at Aston Villa.”

It is added that Suarez would have been keen on the move, but has been blocked by the Spanish outfit.

“Suarez is said to be keen to engineer a reunion with ex-Liverpool colleague Steven Gerrard, now in charge at Villa Park.

But while Suarez has struggled for form recently, his current club has no intention of sanctioning a sale midway through the season.”

Is this the end of the road in this potential deal?
