Steve Bruce confirms Karl Darlow is Newcastle United’s No.1 goalkeeper
Steve Bruce has confirmed that Karl Darlow is now the club’s number one keeper despite the return to fitness of Martin Dubravka.
Darlow number one
Steve Bruce has confirmed that Karl Darlow is now his number one goalkeeper, despite the return to fitness of Martin Dubravka. Darlow was instrumental in helping Newcastle to keep a clean sheet against champions Liverpool in last night’s clash.
With the return of Newcastle’s number one from last season, Darlow’s chances of maintaining his spot between the sticks appeared to be diminishing, especially considering Dubravka was the Magpies’ player of the season last time out. His performances helped the club to stay in the Premier League, and move further up the table.
However, Steve Bruce has confirmed that Darlow is his new number 1, meaning Dubravka will need to fight to get his place back.
“I’m in a fortunate position. I’ve got two excellent goalkeepers, one who’s just got back fit who was our player of the year last year,” said Bruce.
“Karl has waited patiently for his chance because of the form of Dubravka, but at the moment, he’s the number one because of the performances he’s putting in.”
The Slovakian will likely be handed an opportunity to impress when Newcastle face Arsenal in the third round of the FA Cup in less than 2 weeks’ time.
Newcastle get their luck
Newcastle are now 14th in the English top-flight, boasting an 8-point buffer over 18th-placed Fulham, and look like a side ready to push towards a top half finish.
Head coach Steve Bruce is aware that his side rode their luck at times against Liverpool, but suggested that his stars had earned some good fortune:
“Of course we need our goalkeeper to play well and we have to have a little bit of luck along the way, but the effort and the endeavour and the commitment they showed just shows you that it can get you a result,” he said.
“I couldn’t be more pleased. There were signs against Manchester City, which I was pleased about, and to go back-to-back against Manchester City and Liverpool in the manner we’ve done, I couldn’t be any more pleased with what we’ve done tonight.”
There is no let up for the north east club, however, with a tough test against top-4 candidates Leicester City on the horizon. Bruce will need all of his best players available, and will be hopeful of Darlow repaying his faith in keeping out Jamie Vardy and company.
