Spurs reportedly on verge of Steven Bergwijn signing as PSV star omitted from squad to face Twente

Steven Bergwijn

A number of breaking reports stemming from the Netherlands this afternoon claim that Tottenham are closing on the signing of PSV star Steven Bergwijn.

PSV standout

Bergwijn, 22, has long been regarded as one of the finest young talents in all of Dutch football.

The wide-man came up through the youth ranks at PSV, before breaking into the club’s first-team setup at the tender age of 16 during the 2014/15 campaign.

And Bergwign has since gone on to establish himself as a regular for the Dutch powerhouse over the years since.

Last season proved the attacker’s most productive to date, as Bergwijn racked up a hugely-impressive 14 goals and 12 assists in the Eredivisie alone.

To this point in the current campaign, meanwhile, the youngster has directly contributed to 15 goals in 16 league appearances.

Bergwijn’s key attributes are his blistering pace and ability to beat opposing defenders at will, but it is the Dutch international’s end product which sets him apart from so many other wingers of a similar ilk.

Spurs bound

As such, speculation that Bergwijn has become the focus of interest from a number of clubs around Europe has come as little surprise.

In the past, the likes of AC Milan and Manchester United have both been named as keen admirers of the attacker’s talents.

As per the aforementioned updates stemming from Bergwijn’s home country of the Netherlands today, though, the 22-year-old in fact looks set for an imminent move elsewhere.

PSV’s matchday squad for the club’s Eredivisie meeting with FC Twente this afternoon was announced a short time ago.

Bergwijn, though, was a surprise last-minute omission from Ernest Faber’s panel:

And an explanation for his absence has since been forthcoming, amid widespread claims that the winger is angling for a move to Premier League outfit Tottenham.

Some outlets, including Fox Sports Netherlands, have actually gone as far as to state that an agreement is already in place between PSV and Spurs, and that Bergwijn’s move to north London is imminent.

Others suggest that work remains to be done, but that a deal is in the works:

Whatever the case may be, Spurs securing Bergwijn’s signature before the January transfer window slams shut this coming week does now look increasingly likely.
