Spurs old boy Luka Modric told Mateo Kovacic to join Chelsea

Mateo Kovacic joins Chelsea

One of the eye-catching deals of transfer deadline day has been Mateo Kovacic’s loan from Real Madrid to Chelsea.

Kovacic has agreed to a one year deal to stay at Chelsea.

Chelsea have failed to secure an option to buy Kovacic at the end of that term. That suggests the Croat will return to Real Madrid in twelve months time.

@mateokovacic8: ‘I am really happy and excited to be here at Chelsea. It is an amazing feeling. I will try to do my best for this club.’ 👊 #WelcomeKovacic #CFC #Chelsea

Spurs old boy Luka Modric was ‘key’

Thursday’s edition of the London Evening Standard have exclusive quotes from Kovacic about why he opted to leave Real Madrid for Chelsea.

According to the 24-year-old, former Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric advised him to go. Kovacic said:

I speak to Luka always. He is happy for me. He is sad that I am leaving but he told me that London is an amazing city.

He said the Premier League will be tough at the beginning but he said it is a nice League, the stadiums are always full and I will enjoy it.

The claim Modric helped one of Tottenham’s rivals is unlikely to go down too well with Spurs fans.

Chelsea’s summer transfers

Perhaps the most important change at Chelsea this summer has been in the dugout.

Maurizio Sarri was appointed the new Chelsea boss just three weeks before the season.

Why did the Blues wait so long to dismiss Antonio Conte?

In midfield, Italian international Jorginho has moved from Napoli.

Jorginho is tipped to play in a three man midfield with Movacic and N’Golo Kante.

At the back Chelsea have broken the world transfer record on a goalie signing Kepa Arrizabalaga in a £71.6m deal.

Veteran keeper Rob Green has also joined the Blues for the season.
