Footage has emerged today of Spanish defender Gerard Pique being booed and chanted against during a training session with La Roja.
As has been heavily focused on in the news over recent days, an illegal referendum surrounding Catalan independence was called by the natives of Catalonia for this past Sunday.
Spanish police were instructed to remove all ballots from voting stations, with violent clashes having broken out as a result.
Barcelona’s La Liga matchup with Las Palmas on Sunday afternoon had to be played behind closed doors as a result of the trouble in Catalonia, with tens of thousands of fans left frustrated outside the Camp Nou as a result.
The Blaugrana went on to record a 3-0 victory thanks to goals from Sergio Busquets and Lionel Messi (2), but the atmosphere surrounding the victory was far from a celebratory one for Barca’s players.
Emotions running high
Of those to appear for the Camp Nou outfit on Sunday, none were more affected by the harrowing events in Barcelona than Catalan native Gerard Pique, who has long been an advocate for independence for the people of Catalonia.
During a post-game interview, an emotional Pique was questioned on his future with the Spanish national team.
The veteran stopper was frank in his response, revealing:
‘I think I can continue.’
‘But if the board really thinks I’m a problem, I will take a step back and leave the national team before 2018.’

Despite his struggles with ongoings in Catalonia, Pique reported for international duty with Julen Lopetegui’s side yesterday.
However, the Barca star’s already delicate relationship with Spain’s fans seems to have reached its breaking point as a result of his recent comments, with a huge section of La Roja’s supporters having turned up to the training session with one goal in mind: abuse Pique.
