Spain crash out of the World Cup and people are reeling

The game

Spain went into their knockout tie with Russia as heavy favourites, but as we’ve seen time and time again in football’s biggest knockout competitions, favourites means nothing sometimes.

Despite taking the lead early on, Spain managed to get pegged back to 1-1 after Gerard Pique gave a penalty away, and despite the player himself moaning about the decision, it was spot on.

The second half came and went, with Spain lacking in creativity and ideas and Russia were shattered but they held firm and defended for their lives. They hardly left their half for 45 minutes, and when the whistle for extra time came, they looked even more exhausted.

Despite that, they managed to take it all the way to penalties – and avoided giving one away after some pushing and shoving in the box, with VAR their friend, and as we all know, anyone can win on penalties.

It was a chance for De Gea to go from zero to hero after a poor campaign so far – or for Russia to shock the world.

After Spain lost the penalty shootout, people were shocked – and Egypt fans thrilled. It was certainly a moment to remember, and the World Cup of underdogs continued.
