Southgate receives Grealish boost ahead of England selection

Jack Grealish

Spurs’ must-win tie

Aston Villa and England supporters alike will be ecstatic to see Jack Grealish return, when the Villans face Tottenham Hotspur in the penultimate match of the Premier League season. Spurs, on the other hand, have dropped Gareth Bale.

Whilst for Villa, tonight’s clash is effectively one in which there is little more than pride to play for, Ryan Mason has the job of trying to secure European football for next season. A win would effectively do that for Spurs, whilst ensuring rivals Arsenal cannot overtake them.

A final day clash against Leicester City looks a much trickier challenge on paper, meaning any dropped points versus Villa will only pile the pressure on the Lilywhites.

Bale, however, has been dropped by Mason, and instead the inexperienced coach has opted for Dele Alli, Steven Bergwijn and Heung-min Son to support Harry Kane.

One interesting narrative will be how the crowd reacts to the sight of their captain.

It emerged this week that Kane has informed the club that he wishes to leave this summer in search of trophies, meaning the striker may not get the welcome he feels he deserves.

Grealish returns

Gareth Southgate will be breathing a huge sigh of relief to see Jack Grealish return for Villa.

Having looked in a worrying situation after missing several weeks right before the European Championships, his name appearing on Villa’s social posts was good to see.

Southgate will, of course, be spoilt for choice next month, with Phil Foden, Mason Mount and Jadon Sancho performing so well of late. However, Grealish can undoubtedly compete on the same level when firing at the top of his game.

Raheem Sterling, James Maddison, Bukayo Saka and even Emile Smith Rowe will also be eager to throw their hats into the ring, with an impressive attacking cavalry on the cards for England.
