Southampton vs Huddersfield prediction: Southampton 2-1 Huddersfield

It’s fair to say that there is little to play for in this match but Huddersfield will be hoping to end their Premier League journey on a high before dropping down into the Championship.

Southampton are looking for a first win in five.

No side has scored fewer away goals in the competition than the Terriers (11).

Southampton vs Huddersfield: Who will win?

Huddersfield have only won one match on the road all season. Unsurprisingly, Southampton are 4/9 favourites to win on Sunday while a Huddersfield win is priced at 15/2. The draw can be backed at 15/4.

Huddersfield’s away matches this season average 3.06 goals per game. Over 2.5 goals is priced at 8/13.

Shane Long has scored four goals in his last six Premier League outings. Long is 5/1 to open the scoring and 11/8 to score anytime.

Southampton vs Huddersfield Premier League match preview

Southampton host bottom side Huddersfield at St. Mary’s on the final day of the Premier League season.

Southampton’s winless run extended to four matches after they were beaten 3-0 at West Ham last weekend. Southampton have conceded three goals in four of their last six matches.

Southampton’s form has petered out since they confirmed Premier League survival. The Saints begin the weekend 16th in the table, seven points above the drop zone. Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side could climb above Burnley depending on the Clarets’ result against Arsenal.

Huddersfield’s doomed fate has been sealed for sometime and manager Jan Siewert will be urging his side to go out and enjoy themselves, just as they did last weekend.

Huddersfield’s eight-match losing streak came to an end last Sunday as they held Manchester United to a 1-1 draw at home. Isaac Mbenza scored Huddersfield’s equaliser on the hour mark.

Huddersfield have never beaten Southampton in the Premier League in three previous attempts.

Southampton were 3-1 winners when the sides met at the John Smith’s Stadium in the reverse fixture in December. Nathan Redmond, Danny Ings and Michael Obafemi were on target for the Saints. Philip Billing scored a consolation goal for the home side.

Southampton team news vs Huddersfield

Ralph Hasenhuttl will be tempted to field some fringe players for the final match of the season.

Fraser Forster made his first Premier League start since 2017 last time out. Alex McCarthy has a minor knock meaning Forster could continue in goal.

Nathan Redmond, James Ward-Prowse and Oriol Romeu were all partially rested against West Ham and could return to the starting eleven.

Charlie Austin and Matt Targett were unused substitutes last weekend and will be hoping for a run out.

Maya Yoshida is a doubt after coming down with illness.

Jannik Vestergaard is ruled out with a groin injury while Michael Obafemi is a long-term absentee.

Huddersfield team news vs Southampton

A number of fringe players will be pushing for starts in Huddersfield’s final Premier League match before dropping down into the Championship.

Erik Durm may well have played his final game for the club after picking up an injury against Manchester United. Tommy Smith is set to start at right back in Durm’s absence.

Laurent Depoitre, Mathias Jorgensen and Ben Hamer are all doubtful and need to be assessed ahead of kick off.

Steve Mounie, Elias Kachunga and Jon Stankovic were unused substitutes against United and will be pushing for starts.
