Southampton vs Fulham betting tips: Premier League match preview & predictions

Southampton vs Fulham prediction: Southampton 2-1 Fulham

It’s always a huge game when third bottom plays second bottom.

Fulham just can’t stop leaking goals and look doomed.

Southampton meanwhile look toothless upfront and that lack of firepower could see them go down too.

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of this game.

James Ward-Prowse

Southampton vs Fulham: Who will win?

The Saints are slight favourites at 10/11 to claim a vital win.

Fulham have won 88% of their points at home this season and are yet to win an away game.

They are 3/1 to change that here.

A draw, which doesn’t help either side, is 5/2.

As one team can’t score but the other can’t defend, it’s hard to know how many goals there will be.

Both teams to score is 4/5 and over 2.5 goals is 10/11.

Southampton to win and both teams to score is 11/4.

Charlie Austin is likely to lead the line for Southampton. He’s 7/2 to score first and 23/20 to get his fourth of the season.

Aleksandar Mitrović has 10 to his name for Fulham. The Serb is 4/1 to break the deadlock and 5/4 to make that eleven.

Both Austin and Mitrović to score is 3/1.

Southampton vs Fulham: Match preview

Despite a good start to 2019, Southampton remain in big trouble.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s side started January with a draw at Chelsea and back to back wins over Leicester and Everton.

However, they have not won since.

They conceded in the last minute to lose at home to Cardiff and then, on Sunday, they were beaten 2-0 at Arsenal.

The Saints remain in the relegation zone, just one point behind Cardiff and safety.

This is a great opportunity for them to get back to winning ways though, so can they get a vital victory?

Time is very much running out for Fulham.

Despite taking the lead after just 3 minutes on Friday night, they were beaten 3-1 at the London Stadium by West Ham.

That’s now nine London derby league defeats in a row which is the longest ever losing run suffered by any capital club.

That also means it’s 3 league defeats in a row and 6 losses from 7.

The Cottagers remain 19th and are a massive 8 points from safety.

They need wins and soon, so will they get, what would be, an unexpected away victory?

Ralph Hasenhutt

Since taking over in December, Ralph Hasenhüttl has picked a 3-4-3 formation in each and every game.

Despite poor form, the formation is one thing that will not change.

His goalkeeper might change from the weekend though.

Angus Gunn got a rare start at Arsenal but he has not made back to back starts for Southampton so it’s expected that Alex McCarthy will come back in.

The back 3 will be unchanged though.

At left wing-back, Ryan Bertrand will come back in for Matt Targett.

On the other side, teenager Yan Valery is very much the first choice now.

So much so that Euro 2016 winner Cédric left the club to join Inter last month.

The midfield trio of Højbjerg, Romeu and Ward-Prowse will also be unchanged.

There might be changes further forward though.

The Saints did not start with a recognised striker on Sunday.

That’s partially because Danny Ings and Shane Long are both injured; the former could be back amongst the substitutes.

Teenager Michael Obafemi is also out.

He came on at Arsenal on Sunday but then went off with an hamstring injury just minutes later which will rule him out for the rest of the season.

Charlie Austin could start for the first time since 30 December.

Stuart Armstrong, who scored twice at Craven Cottage, may make way.

Does this XI have enough firepower to defeat the leakiest defence in the league?

Fulham team news vs Southampton

BURNLEY, ENGLAND – JANUARY 12: André Schürrle of Fulham celebrates with teammates Aleksandar Mitrović and Ryan Sessegnon after scoring his team’s first goal during the Premier League match between Burnley FC and Fulham FC at Turf Moor on January 12, 2019 in Burnley, United Kingdom. As for Fulham, they have now conceded more than once in 21 of their 27 Premier League games, including all 7 during 2019.

On loan Sevilla goalkeeper Sergio Rico was shambolic on Friday night but he’s started the last 18 league games.

It’ll be interesting to see if either Fabri or Marcus Bettinelli come in for the Spanish international.

In defence, centre-back Håvard Nordtveit made his debut for the club against his old side on Friday.

He’ll continue in a back two alongside Tim Ream.

The terrible form of Maxime Le Marchand and  Cyrus Christie means they’ll both be left out.

With Timothy Fosu-Mensah also out of favour, Denis Odoi will continue at right-back.

In midfield, Arsenal loanee Calum Chambers and Jean Michaël Seri will continue their partnership.

André-Frank Zambo Anguissa is in contention though after appearing for the first time since early December at West Ham.

In attacking positions, they have an array of options.

Ryan Sessegnon and Tom Cairney got the nod last time out with Ryan Babel playing off the front.

Babel’s third minute goals was his first goal in the Premier League for exactly 3000 days.

All three are expected to start but any one of André Schürrle, Lazar Marković or Luciano Vietto could come in.

No doubt who’ll be up front.

Aleksandar Mitrović’s ten goals accounts to 38% of Fulham’s total goals, highlighting his importance.

The problem is though, they can’t keep them out at the other end.

Can Claudio Ranieri pull off a shock win?
