Southampton vs Chelsea: Who will win?

Southampton are underdogs to win this one and are 29/10.

Chelsea are odds on to leave the south coast victorious at 17/20.

A draw, which the home side would probably take now, is 11/4.

Over 2.5 goals is 4/6.

Both teams to score is 4/7.

Chelsea to win and both teams to score is 9/4.

Danny Ings has been in decent form for the Saints. He is 13/2 to score first and 23/10 to net anytime.

Nathan Redmond could also be a threat. He is 17/2 to score first and 3/1 to score anytime.

Tammy Abraham added to his impressive tally in mid-week. He is 3/1 to break the deadlock and evens to get his eighth Premier League goal of the season already.

Mason Mount has also been chipping in with goals this season. He is 6/1 to open the scoring and 21/10 to add to his tally.

Both Redmond and Ings to score is 12/1.

Both James Ward-Prowse and Ings to score is 16/1.

It’s been an underwhelming start to the season for Southampton.

Given that Ralph Hasenhüttl won 30 points from 22 matches in charge last season, more was expected of them this time around.

However, last Saturday’s 2-1 defeat at Tottenham made it back to back defeats in the Premier League.

That loss was particularly frustrating given that Spurs were reduced to ten-men in the 36th minute.

Southampton have now lost more Premier League matches against former managers than any other club, 19 in total, with over a third of those coming against Mauricio Pochettino (7).

That defeat also means they have seven points from seven matches and all of their points were won in the space of three matches.

They beat Brighton and Sheffield United away either side of a 1-1 home draw with Manchester United.

Thus, they’re yet to win at home this campaign having now won only ten of their last 49 Premier League home matches.

This is strange given that, Southampton have actually scored in their last 17 Premier League games at St Mary’s.

They last enjoyed a longer run in the top-flight of this nature between April 1980 and December 1981, 31 matches.

Although, they have only kept one clean sheet in this run which may explain their lack of wins during this period.

Southampton have lost the last four times Chelsea have come to town, not beating them at home since 2013.

Can they end their blues against the Blues in this one?

Will Chelsea win again?

Chelsea meanwhile hosted Brighton last weekend in one of the most one-sided matches of the season .

They attempted 17 shots in the first half but, at the break, it was 0-0 making it their highest amounts of shots in a half without scoring since November 2010 against Birmingham, 18.

But, less than five minutes into the second half, they were awarded the perfect chance to take the lead in the form of a penalty.

Jorginho stepped up and cooly slotted away.

That was the 100th penalty to be scored at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, 78 for Chelsea and 22 against, making it the first ground to reach this milestone.

Later on, Willian fired home a second to wrap up the 2-0 victory.

The Blues have now won all nine of their league meetings with Brighton.

This makes it a new Football League record for most games played by a side against another with one team winning every single match.

This season, that was their third win of the campaign so they sit seventh in the table as one of four teams on 11 points.

Then, on Wednesday, they made the short trip to Lille in the Champions League.

Tammy Abraham opened the scoring, assisted by Fikayo Tomori.

This was Chelsea’s first goal in the Champions League scored and assisted by two English players since 2012.

The home side did equalise before Willian’s superb volley secured a win on the road.

Can they now make it four wins in a row in all competitions?

Chelsea have conceded 27 goals on the road in the Premier League in 2019, the second most.

But, Chelsea have scored  in their last 15 away matches against Southampton in all competitions; last failing to net in 1997.

Will Chelsea leave St Mary’s with goals and a win this time too?

Southampton team news vs Chelsea

Ralph Hasenhutt

Ralph Hasenhüttl is expected to continue with his preferred 4-2-2-2 formation in this match.

Angus Gunn is firmly the number one goalkeeper these days; he made his Premier League debut against Chelsea back in January.

In defence, Hasenhüttl’s plans were in tatters last weekend when Cédric pulled out injured in the warm-up.

That muscle injury will keep him out of this one too so Yan Valery will play at right-back.

Jan Bednarek and Jannik Vestergaard are the first-choice centre-back pairing with Ryan Bertrand, who won the Champions League with Chelsea, at left-back.

Captain Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and another former Chelsea player, Oriol Romeu, will anchor the midfield.

James Ward-Prowse will be further forward after playing in the Premier League for the 100th time last weekend.

Moussa Djenepo is out with a thigh injury.

Nathan Redmond is back from an injury of his own and may be pushed into a front two.

His parter will be Danny Ings; five of the last six Premier League goals have come against last season’s top-six, including both of his strikes this season, against Liverpool and Tottenham.

Will Ings score again in a big game for Southampton?

Chelsea team news vs Southampton

As for Chelsea, they switched to a back three in mid-week and, up against two strikers, could stick with this formation.

As always, Kepa Arrizabalaga will be in goal.

In defence, after another underwhelming performance, Kurt Zouma is expected to drop out for Andreas Christensen.

There’s still no Antonio Rüdiger who has a groin problem.

Captain César Azpilicueta has moved back to right centre-back where he played so well under Conte.

In the 68 games that Frank Lampard has managed either at Derby or Chelsea in all competitions, his teams have only kept a clean sheet in 22% of those matches.

He’ll be hoping this defence can up that %.

Further forward, another highly-rated youngster Reece James appeared to be loving life at right wing-back in Lille.

On the other side, Marcos Alonso is taking his chance with Emerson Palmieri out with a thigh problem.

In midfield, N’Golo Kanté is likely to continue alongside Jorginho with Ruben Loftus-Cheek injured and Mateo Kovačić out of favour.

Further forward, Willian’s two goals this week should see him start once more.

Since making his Champions League debut for Chelsea in September 2013, the Brazilian has been directly involved in more goals than any other player for the club, 15, registering 10 goals and five assists.

However, his goal against Brighton was his first goal in 17 Premier League appearances for Chelsea.

He last found the net against Newcastle in January and had attempted 32 shots without scoring between these goals in the league.

Mason Mount will also play higher-up trying to supply top-scorer Tammy Abraham.

Abraham became just the second Englishman to score on his birthday in the UEFA Champions League in mid-week.

He turned 22 on Wednesday and netted in the 22nd minute.

He’s certainly a man in form so will he fire Chelsea to another league win here?
