Southampton v Liverpool: EFL Cup preview

Southampton host Liverpool on Wednesday night in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final tie.

Both sides drew on the weekend in their FA Cup 3rd round ties.

Southampton drew 2-2 at Norwich, conceding a stoppage time equaliser. Defenders Virgil van Dijk and Maya Yoshida both got on the scoresheet.

The draw put an end to Southampton’s run of three consecutive defeats.

A much-changed Liverpool side drew 0-0 with League Two side Plymouth Argyle on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp fielded the youngest ever Reds starting eleven, with an average age of 21 years and 296 days.

Liverpool thrashed Southampton 6-1 at St Mary’s in the same competition at the quarter-final stage in 2015.

The two sides have already met at St Mary’s this season, playing to a 0-0 draw back in November.

Huge offer on Liverpool to win

Southampton v Liverpool team news

Claude Puel has ruled out Jose Fonte, who joins defenders Cedric Soares and Matt Targett on the sidelines.

Dejan Lovren, Adam Lallana and Nathaniel Clyne could all face their former side, but there will be no reunion for Sadio Mane, who is representing Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Jordan Henderson is likely to miss out but Philippe Coutinho could return to the matchday squad.

The match is likely to come too soon for Joel Matip but Klopp confirmed there are no problems with James Milner.
