Southampton set for Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg bonus if Tottenham qualify for Champions League

Saints Bonus

Southampton had a good weekend in which they overcame Bournemouth in the Quarter Final of the FA Cup, thanks to a brace from Nathan Redmond and one for  Moussa Djenepo.

The reward is a date with Leicester City in the semi-finals on the weekend of the 17th of April, with the winners set to face either Manchester City or Chelsea in the season showpiece finale.

It isn’t all good news however for the Saints. According to a report from David Ornstein in the Athletic, there is a clause in the sale of Pierre Emile Hojbjerg, which relates to bonus payments due should Spurs qualify for the Champions League.

Hojbjerg made the switch to the north London side in the summer for an initial fee of over £15 million and the Saints could be due up to £2 million if Spurs make the Champions League in future seasons.

Southampton are of course enduring a terrible run of form, having lost 10 of their last 12 Premier League games, with only one win in that time. Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be looking to strengthen his squad in the summer and will be looking for all available funds to come his way, especially after a year in which the club have been affected by the pandemic.

Tottenham, who are in sixth position,  did move to within 3 points of Chelsea in fourth, after their 2-0 win last night at Aston Villa, ending a miserable week in which they lost the North London Derby and crashed out of the Europa League.

Nathan Redmond provided a man-of-the-match performance in their FA Cup win, and scored a goal reminiscent of Michael Owen’s for England vs Argentina at the 1998 World Cup. He was also involved in 3 goals in a game for the first time since 2015.

When asked why he often flattered to deceive, Hassenthuttl responded;

“If we would know this, then we would change it!”
