Ralph Hasenhuttl has this afternoon provided a fitness update on the Southampton squad, ahead of their clash with Newcastle.

Newcastle vs Southampton

The Saints are set to travel to St. James’ Park on Saturday evening, for their latest Premier League outing.

The two sides will head into proceedings separated by just one place and two points in the English top-flight table.

Newcastle hold the advantage over Southampton, albeit having played a game more.

Cardiff’s surprise victory at Brighton on Tuesday night, meanwhile, means that Southampton, despite their impressive recent form, now sit just 5 points clear of the relegation zone.

Valery in, Vestergaard out?

As such, speaking ahead of the Saints’ potentially-crucial visit to Tyneside in 2 days’ time, Ralph Hasenhuttl has provided fitness updates on a number of his side’s players.

Yan Valery, who was forced off during Southampton’s 3-1 win over Wolves last weekend, looks certain to feature from the start at St. James’ Park.

All of Alex McCarthy, Matt Targett and Charlie Austin, though, are in doubt:

Central-defender Jannik Vestergaard, meanwhile, is also facing a race against time to face Newcastle, with the Dane continuing to struggle with a groin injury:
