Southampton expect to agree new contract with Ralph Hasenhuttl before end of season – Telegraph

Southampton’s revival under Hasenhuttl

Southampton’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign got off to a rather worrying start.

The Saints would win just one of their first six league ties this term.

Southampton were then humiliated by Leicester City at the back end of October, losing 9-0 at home to Brendan Rodgers’ side.

That 9-0 loss was the joint-biggest defeat in Premier League history.

But it also looked to spark somewhat of a revival at Southampton.

Granted, they would lose their following two league ties, one of which was against Manchester City.

But shortly after the Man City defeat, Southampton’s form took an upturn, with Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side picking up some crucial wins against fellow relegation battlers Watford and Norwich.

Southampton have also since earned impressive wins over Chelsea and Tottenham, whilst getting some revenge on Leicester, winning 2-1 at the King Power in January.

Hasenhuttl set for new deal?

Southampton are now up to 13th in the English top-flight, and would begin the weekend sat seven points clear of the relegation zone.

And their recent run of positive results now looks to have earned Ralph Hasenhuttl a contract extension.

The Austrian joined the club in December of 2018, and his contract runs until 2021.

But according to the Telegraph, Southampton expect to agree a new contract with Ralph Hasenhuttl before the end of the season.

Southampton are understood to have set a target of 38 points in the aftermath of that Leicester hammering. Now, though, as per the Telegraph, the club believe they can secure a top-10 finish come the end of the campaign.

The report from the Telegraph also claims that Shane Long, whose current deal expires in the summer, will sign a contract extension.
