Southampton dealt major Jack Stephens blow ahead of Wolves

Southampton see off Sheffield United

Southampton and Sheffield United went head-to-head in a 3rd round League Cup tie on Tuesday.

The tie was level at 2-2 following the 90 minutes, after Sheffield United goals from Enda Stevens and Oli McBurnie cancelled out strikes from Ibrahima Diallo and Mohammed Salisu.

As a result, the game would go straight to penalties, where Southampton would emerge as 4-2 victors.

Southampton must now turn their attention to the Premier League, where they will face off with Wolves this weekend.

Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are yet to pick up a single win in the league this term, though they have drawn four in five, with their latest point coming against champions, Manchester City.

As a result, they are likely confident of getting something from the game against Bruno Lage’s men.

Jack Stephens blow

One player who will not be taking part in the game vs Wolves, or any of Southampton’s clashes for a while, is Jack Stephens.

The defender had been a regular feature for the south coast outfit so far this term. However, he was forced off after just 37 minutes during the aforementioned clash with Man City last weekend:

And now, Ralph Hasenhuttl has confirmed that Stephens will be out for around 10-12 weeks, a big blow for Southampton:

“We have now with Jack Stephens a player who is long out, 10 to 12 weeks maybe, so we need every centre-back.

“A long-term injury is always a blow to us. The tendon on the knee is disrupted, so it’s a tendon injury. It takes, I don’t know how long, but it will take time.”
