As per a report from Sky Sports News, Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is pushing the club’s board to wrap up a deal for Harry Maguire as quickly as possible.
United’s defensive struggles
On the back of a hugely-underwhelming campaign last time out, Ed Woodward and co. are currently in the process of rebuilding the Manchester United squad.
One area of particular concern for the Red Devils throughout 2018/19, meanwhile, was the club’s shaky backline.
The latest in a string of disappointing respective individual seasons from the likes of Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Eric Bailly saw United struggle to hold opposing sides at bay on a near-weekly basis.
This eventually resulted in the Manchester giants conceding a hefty 54 league goals, the most of the English top-flight’s top 9 clubs, and more than a United side had ever previously conceded during a Premier League campaign.
If ever you wanted to know how bad things are at United, a defender has just won our Player of the Year in the same season we’ve conceded the most goals we’ve ever conceded in the history of the Premier League.

As such, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have since inevitably been linked with a number of potential defensive reinforcements.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka has of course already made the move to Old Trafford from Crystal Palace.
And next on the wishlist of the United hierarchy is said to be a central defender.
To this point in the summer, the stopper most persistently-linked with the Red Devils has been Leicester City stalwart Harry Maguire.
Foxes’ star man Maguire was also named as a prime target for United last summer, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seemingly just as big a fan of the talents of the English international as predecessor Jose Mourinho.
OGS pushing for Maguire
And, despite Leicester continuing to hold firm in their stance that Maguire will not depart the King Power unless his valuation is met, most are nevertheless of the belief that United will eventually strike a deal before the transfer window slams shut next month.
As per the aforementioned report from Sky Sports, meanwhile, the main candidate behind the Red Devils’ push for the 26-year-old appears to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
United boss Solskjaer is said to have ‘made it clear’ to the club’s board that he wants Maguire signed as soon as possible.
This stance is likely to have been hastened further by the serious-looking injury picked up by Eric Bailly earlier today.
As such, the onus is now very much on Ed Woodward to find an agreement with Leicester:
Sky sources say that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made it clear to Manchester United that he wants to sign Harry Maguire as soon as possible.
It is now up to Ed Woodward to complete a deal for the centre-back.
