Solskjaer on what Man United’s fans can expect from Amad Diallo & plans for first-team integration

Solskjaer on what Man United’s fans can expect from Amad Diallo & plans for first-team integration

Reds switch

The major talking point at Old Trafford this week has of course surrounded the arrival of starlet Diallo.

The 18-year-old was at the heart of one of a number of deadline day deals struck by United this past October, when he joined Edinson Cavani, Alex Telles and Facundo Pellistri in putting pen to paper on terms with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men.

Diallo, though, unlike the aforementioned trio, did not actually make the move to Manchester at the time.

With the Reds having been waiting for international clearance and the processing of a new passport for their latest big-money addition, it was decided that he would remain in Italy for the opening half of the campaign.

In turn, after the final details of the deal were thrashed out earlier this week, United announced that their swoop for Diallo had indeed been finalised, with the youngster set to link up with his new teammates imminently:

‘Special abilities’

And, as outlined above, on the back of Diallo’s arrival finally being made official, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer today opened up on his hopes for the Ivorian.

Speaking ahead of United’s FA Cup 3rd-round meeting with Watford on Saturday evening, the Norwegian was drawn on a number of topics with regards to Diallo, including both his abilities and best position.

And Solskjaer went on to explain:

‘He’s a young boy who we’ve watched for a few years. We’ve seen him here play in the UEFA Youth League for the kids. He’s got special abilities of course.’

‘Very good balance, reads the game really well and for a young boy he seems very mature in his decision-making. A boy that we’re excited to develop further.’

‘Of course we know he’s a young boy who’s going to learn his trade and come into a new country and new style of football, so we’ve got to be patient with him.’

‘I think he’s comfortable in many positions. Right wing is probably the position he’s played the most, with his left foot coming inside.’

‘Then again, in the Champions League for Atalanta he played on the left – he cut inside and he went outside, so he can play different positions for us. Let’s give him time to find his feet here in England and we’ll hopefully see him soon.’

Perhaps the most noteworthy takeaway of all from Solskjaer’s interview, though, surrounded when the Manchester United faithful could see Diallo in action in the club’s colours for the first time:

‘He joins in the training with the first team and gets settled in. Then we need to give him match time – first team or Under-23s, we’re not going to be able to say now. Let’s see how he takes to it. You’ve got kids who just come in and tell us as staff that they’re ready for the difficult games.’
