Solskjaer on decision to hand captain’s armband to Pogba over Bruno Fernandes vs Granada

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an insight into his decision to hand the captain’s armband to Paul Pogba, for the club’s meeting with Granada.

Europa showdown

The Red Devils are of course set to return to action shortly.

Solskjaer and co. will welcome La Liga outfit Granada to Old Trafford, for the 2nd leg of the Europa League quarter-final clash between the clubs.

It is tonight’s hosts who hold a clear advantage heading into proceedings, on the back of a comfortable victory in Spain last week.

Goals from Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes eventually saw United emerge on the right side of a 2-0 scoreline, to put one foot in the competition’s final-4.

The Premier League giants since followed up with another solid victory over the weekend, when they recovered from a goal down to get the better of Tottenham in north London.

‘A leader on and off the field’

As such, United are no doubt confident in their chances of keeping alive the club’s positive recent spell of form, with a 4th successive victory across all competitions on Thursday night.

Ahead of the action getting underway in Manchester, meanwhile, the XI opted for by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was unveiled a short time ago.

The Reds boss has opted for a strong line-up, featuring the likes of Mason Greenwood, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba.

One of those missing not only from United’s XI, but the club’s matchday squad altogether this evening, though, is Harry Maguire.

This comes with the ever-present stopper, along with Luke Shaw, suspended for the 2nd Granada showdown.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was therefore left with a decision to make regarding his captain for tonight, with Maguire of course the club’s current skipper.

And, despite the aforementioned Fernandes having previously donned the armband on the European stage this season, in the end, the United boss opted for Paul Pogba.

In turn, when inevitably drawn on his decision during a pre-match interview, Solskjaer was quick to talk up his French midfield star’s leadership qualities, explaining:

‘He’s [Pogba] a leader on and off the field. He’s a big character and personality in the group.’

Solskjaer continued:

‘But we’ve got loads; loads of them have worn the armband. Harry [Maguire] is the normal captain, but we’ve got a group of very experienced players.’
