Solskjaer left frustrated by Greenwood’s England call-up: “He should have been rested”

Chaotic start

A call-up to the England squad is viewed as the pinnacle by many footballers who have earned the right to represent their country.

Mason Greenwood’s introduction to the Three Lions’ senior squad has been nothing short of majorly controversial, though. Not only was the 18-year-old’s selection a surprise, but the events which occurred whilst he was away with the squad damaged the youngster’s reputation.

Both Greenwood and Phil Foden were told to return home after breaking quarantine rules whilst in Iceland.

Following his return to England, it later emerged that the Manchester United starlet had been filmed consuming ‘laughing gas.’

Greenwood issued a statement, and the matter was swiftly laid to rest. However, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s latest press conference has led to questions regarding Gareth Southgate’s decision to call Greenwood up in the first place.

Should have been rested

In today’s presser, Solskjaer spoke bluntly regarding both his and the club’s views on the decision to call Mason Greenwood up for England’s Nations League matches against Iceland and Denmark.

The United boss said: “I tried my best to give him a rest over the summer.”

“The club, we asked specifically and pointed out that he should have had a rest.

“He needs it mentally and physically after that season he had. First thing that happens is, one, he’s called up, and two, he’s right there in the press.

“We’ve done whatever we can to protect him and I will keep on helping him.”

Despite the frustration, and calls for the player to be ‘mentally and physically’ rested, though, Solskjaer also confirmed that Greenwood will be available for United’s season opener against Crystal Palace.

So far this summer, the Red Devils have only managed to secure one signing, Donny van de Beek from Ajax, whilst the saga surrounding Jadon Sancho continues to rumble on.

Without further additions, the north west club will therefore again be relying on Greenwood to recapture the strong form which earned him a call-up to the England squad in the first place.
