A poor start to the season from Michail Antonio
West Ham right back Michail Antonio suffered a poor night at Stamford Bridge on Monday and is probably wondering if his second season in the Premier League is going to be a lot more difficult.
Antonio was one of West Ham’s standout players last season, following a move from Nottingham Forest.
But, there are major question marks over whether Antonio is a right back in a back four having made his name further up in midfield.
Antonio gives penalty away v Chelsea
The start of the second half at Chelsea was a personal nightmare for Antonio.
He gave the penalty away which was scored by Eden Hazard for 1-0 Chelsea. Antonio was booked for his rash challenge.
And, then on 52 minutes played, Antonio was substituted by Slaven Bilic and replaced by Sam Byram, a more natural right back.
It was undoubtedly foolish play from Michail Antonio to give away the penalty. He got the ball away with a brilliant drag-back then ran into trouble.
The incident has also lead to an embarrassing apology from West Ham’s shirt sponsors Betway.
They Tweeted after the penalty was given away a very harsh assessment on Antonio, describing him as “an accident waiting to happen.”
Cue a lengthy apology from Betway on Tuesday, with the betting company forced to apologise to the player himself, Slaven Bilic and West Ham, see below.
