Steve Bruce cabbage attack: Eye-witness account of what happened during Aston Villa 3 – Preston 3

Aston Villa 3 – Preston 3

In the build up to Aston Villa’s Championship match with Preston, rumours swirled that Steve Bruce only had two games to save his job.

Does that mean Aston Villa have to win at Millwall this weekend or Bruce gets the chop?

Villa drew 3-3 at home to Preston North End on Tuesday.

Villa managed to lose a 2-nil lead after Jonathan Kodjia and Tammy Abraham had fired the hosts ahead.

Villa had James Chester sent off in the 54th minute, and that started that Preston fight back.

Daniel Johnson scored from the spot, while Paul Gallagher and Louis Moult scored twice in two minutes to turn the scoreline on it’s head.

Yannick Bolasie levelled in the 90th minute, while Villa missed a 95th minute penalty.

Yet, the big story from the game wasn’t what happened on the pitch.

Instead one Aston Villa fan focused attentions after he threw a cabbage towards Steve Bruce.

Fortunately the cabbage missed it’s target. A direct hit could have opened up criminal proceedings.

On Wednesday, BirminghamLive photographer Tim Harley-Easthope has given his eye-witness account to what happened:

I was standing by the dugout on the walkround at the side of the pitch. I was standing there waiting to take pictures of Steve Bruce and Alex Neil walking up to us. I was about two yards short of the dugout.

This bloke started ranting and raving. I was taking pictures of Bruce and then I felt this object brush past me. It landed on the floor just in front of me.

This bloke was irate and was hurling abuse at Bruce. He said something along the lines of, ‘You’re a f***ing disgrace’, after he’d thrown the cabbage.

Bruce and [Stephen] Clemence saw it and they both stood and glared at this bloke and shook their heads. The bloke ran up the steps and into the concourse.
