One of the big flash points at St Mary’s happened in the first half.

Southampton centre-half Wesley Hoedt got into a to-and-fro with Stoke forward Mame Biram Diouf.

Diouf was the first to strike when the Stoke striker stomped on the Saints defender’s foot – an incident which went unpunished by the ref.

But minutes later Hoedt exerted his own retribution on Stoke’s Diouf as he took him out in an aerial challenge.

As Diouf jumped for a ball in the air, Southampton’s Hoedt rushed on the scene to take the man and the ball.
