Fans shocked by Southampton vs Liverpool team sheets

Southampton vs Liverpool

When the team sheets came out on Sunday before the match before Southampton and Liverpool there were shocks.

Liverpool headed to St Mary’s looking to maintain their top four hopes.

After Tottenham’s win over Arsenal in the north London derby, the pressure was back on Jurgen Klopp’s team.

As for Southampton, they are still looking to secure their top flight hopes.

The team sheets

The Southampton and Liverpool XIs were as follows:

Southampton: McCarthy, Soares, Stephens, Hoedt, Bertrand, Lemina, Romeu, Hojbjerg, Ward-Prowse, Carrillo, Tadic.

Subs: Forster, Yoshida, Davis, Redmond, Boufal, Long, Gabbiadini

Liverpool: Karius, Alexander-Arnold, Matip, van Dijk, Robertson, Can, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wijnaldum, Mane, Firmino, Salah.

Fans react

Jordan Henderson was left out of the Liverpool XI ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League last-16 trip to Porto.

Dejan Lovren was also left out the team.

The good news for Liverpool fans was the sight of Salah, Firmino and Mane in the starting XI.

As for Southampton, Tadic was in but no room for Boufal. Why?

In general, however, Saints fans felt Mauricio Pellegrini actually got the XI right.

Southampton vs Liverpool Premier League preview

Liverpool wiped the floor with Southampton when the two sides met back in November.

Mo Salah (of course) scored a brace whilst Phillipe Coutinho added a third late on to secure a 3-0 victory for The Reds.

Virgil Van Dijk played the full 90 minutes during that match but couldn’t handle Liverpool’s deadly forward three.

Liverpool fans were left very disappointed last Sunday as Harry Kane scored a controversial late penalty to deny their side three points.

Klopp’s team played very well in spells but failed to beat a Spurs side who received two generous penalty decisions in their favour.

Southampton’s away win at the Hawthorns will have been the perfect morale boost going into the Liverpool match.

Despite Liverpool’s insane attacking presence, their defence lets the team down on a regular basis and opposing teams know that they are a side who are possible to beat.
