Sheffield United are now up to third in the Championship after the win.
Aston Villa, who lost in last season’s Championship playoff final, are down in 12th after six matches.
The match was over as a contest in the first half.
Sheffield United went ahead after just six minutes through Jack O’Connell. Mark Duffy added a second in the 23rd minute, while Oliver Norwood made it 3-0 before the break.
The Blades extended their lead through Billy Sharp at the start of the second half. Anwar El Ghazi scored a consolation for Aston Villa.
Sheffield United’s ‘unacceptable’ announcement
After the match, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder apologised to Aston Villa.
That’s after the man behind the club’s PA system issued a cheeky message. As reported in the Express & Star:
When the fourth official raised the stoppage time board, PA announcer Gary Sinclair jokingly proclaimed: “Unfortunately there are only two minutes of stoppage time.”
Though it amused the crowd, Wilder was left less than impressed.
Speaking after the game, he said: “I’ll deal with that because we’re a humble club. I apologise to Steve Bruce and the Aston Villa players because it’s not acceptable.”
