One problem with Wenger’s brutal Lichtsteiner & Xhaka criticism vs Brazil

Arsene Wenger on BeIN Sports

No longer Arsenal’s manager, Arsene Wenger was a guest pundit on BeIN Sports on Sunday night at the 2018 World Cup.

Wenger was on during the Brazil versus Switzerland game.

That offered Wenger the opportunity to see a couple of Arsenal stars in action.

First Wenger got to view Granit Xhaka, who he signed to the Gunners for 35 million pounds.

Wenger also got the opportunity to discuss Stephan Lichtsteiner, who has moved to Arsenal this summer from Juventus.

Granit Xhaka & Stephan Lichtsteiner

An eye-catching set of Arsene Wenger quotes are going viral on social media after the Brazil-Switzerland game.

During the BeIN Sports broadcast, Wenger ‘reportedly’ made the following comments about Switzerland’s two Gunners:

Lichtsteiner is too slow to deal with the pace of Marcelo, Coutinho, and Neymar on the left. Xhaka’s positioning has been poor and hasn’t been able to contain the Brazilian midfield.

But there was one major problem with these Wenger quotes.

They were completely made up! Wenger never said this!

Sadly the fake news is everyone on Monday morning.

Lichtsteiner injury

Lichtsteiner, the Swiss captain, was forced out the game with an injury.

Lichtsteiner’s problem will worry Arsenal fans, as the right-back appeared unable to keep up with the rigours of the match.

Will Lichtsteiner have enough gas in the tank for a full season of Premier League football?

Wenger on VAR

Should the Swiss goal have stood against Brazil?

Steven Zuber’s 50th minute header drew the Swiss level against the South Americans.

However Brazil felt the goal should have been chalked off as Zuber pushed Miranda before his goal.

For Wenger, he understood why Brazil complained. Yet he noted that Miranda’s positioning was poor, while adding that if VAR had been called upon, that could of had a bad precedent on all future corners at the World Cup.
