Why Mesut Ozil & Sami Khedira were dropped for Germany vs Sweden

Mesut Ozil

Germany vs Sweden

When the team sheets came on on Saturday night for the World Cup match between Germany and Sweden, there were some surprises in the Germany XI.

Germany, of course, are the reigning world champions.

However Die Mannschaft lost their opening World Cup match in Russia against Mexico. Germany were beaten 1-0.

As for Sweden, they kicked off their World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win over South Korea.

The equation was simple for Germany: lose, and their World Cup dream would be over.

No Mesut Ozil, no Sami Khedira

The two surprises in the Germany XI were the omissions of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil and Juventus’ Sami Khedira.

Both Ozil and Khedira started the match against Mexico.

Ozil has also started the last 26 consecutive matches for the Germans. He’s been one of the most reliable players for Jogi Low in his tenure.

And Khedira’s absence was also questionable. One of the big issues for this German side is their issues with enforcers in the team. And now Khedira is out?

The German XI was as follows: Neuer, Kimmich, Boateng, Rudiger, Hector, Rudy, Kroos, Muller, Reus, Draxler, Werner.

Why were Ozil and Khedira dropped?

So why did Ozil and Khedira get the chop?

The issue was widely discussed on social media.
