Newcastle fans spread unsubstantiated rumour for why Stoke sold Joselu

Newcastle, Stoke & Joselu

After losing 2-0 against Tottenham last weekend, many Newcastle fans have been calling for new signings.

Hearing those calls, Newcastle announced on Wednesday that Spanish striker Joselu has joined from Stoke.

Newcastle have been linked to Joselu for a few weeks. Stoke were thought to be demanding 12 million pounds for the 27-year-old forward, but Newcastle got the deal done for just five million pounds instead.

Newcastle confirm deal

Newcastle reported the signing on their official website, saying:

The 27-year-old becomes the Magpies’ sixth summer signing, penning a three-year-deal with the club which will keep him at St. James’ Park until 2020.

“I feel very happy, because I have signed for a very big club. I’m very happy to be part of this club, and so excited,” said Joselu.

Benítez added: “We have known Joselu since his days at the Real Madrid academy, and we know that he has the potential to do well for us.”

Fans react to Joselu

Reaction to Joselu’s move from Stoke to Newcastle has provoked some interesting reactions on social media.

Some Stoke fans are bemoaning the deal, while not all Newcastle supporters seem convinced Joselu will be a success at St James’ Park.

100% unsubstantiated rumour

So why did the deal happen?

Newcastle fans are spreading a theory why Stoke wanted to get rid of Joselu this summer.

To be clear, there is absolutely no evidence this rumour has any substance.

And yet it’s spreading fast…
