Paul Pogba v Newcastle

Man United fans go nuts at Paul Pogba-Steven Gerrard comparison

Paul Pogba’s brilliant comeback for Man United v Newcastle

There is undoubtedly new life in Manchester United’s season, with a heartening 4-1 win over Newcastle on Saturday.

It wasn’t just the three points, but the nature of the Manchester United performance and the key players that returned which will please fans of the Red Devils.

Paul Pogba was the star turn for Manchester United having been out since September with a hamstring injury.

The French midfielder set up the equaliser for Anthony Martial and finished off a fine move for Manchester United’s third goal.

There is little doubt that Manchester United are a better team with Pogba fit. And, Zlatan Ibrahimovic provides plenty of strength in depth as well with the Swede returning from his 212 day lay-off.

Rafa Benitez compares Paul Pogba with Steven Gerrard

After the game, Newcastle manager Rafa Benitez was asked how Pogba stacks up against Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Benitez was manager of Gerrard for arguably his finest moment, the 2005 comeback Champions League win in Istanbul versus AC Milan.

The current Newcastle manager said: “He Gerrard was a top-class player. Pogba is a great player, but he still has to be consistent for years like Stevie was for ten or 15 years.”

“He could make the difference in every game…”

Benitez added: “He was very consistent and could make the difference in every game, with or without the ball.”

To be fair to Rafa Benitez, he merely suggested that we should judge Pogba and Gerrard when the Frenchman’s career is over.

Yet, this has not gone down well with Manchester United supporters. See the Tweets below.
