Two of Portugal’s top papers on Thursday have the same story on their front page: Liverpool’s Lazar Markovic may be going back to Benfica after just one season at Anfield.
The story was carried on the front pages of A Bola and Record.
Eleven months ago, Liverpool completed the £20m signing of Lazar Markovic from Benfica on a long-term deal. The Serb agreed to stay at Liverpool until 2019.
Markovic, 21, came to Liverpool’s attentions after he scored seven goals in 49 appearances during the 2013-14 campaign as Benfica sealed a domestic treble and reached the Europa League final.
Unfortunately, Markovic’s first year at Anfield wasn’t such a success. Failing to holding down a first team place, Markovic was involved in 19 Premier League games scoring twice.
Yet most Reds fans believe Markovic still has time to come good, and thus news that the Serb maybe heading back to Benfica so soon has gone down like a ton of bricks.

Benfica doing a permanent deal for Lazar Markovic, considering what #LFC paid for him, seems very difficult. (Record)

If we move Markovic back to Benfica, I am officially done with this club for some time. Nothing but a laughing stock.

Markovic to Benfica was just a very minor article in A Bola's paper edition, so I wouldn't read to much into it.

I want to see Markovic utilized this season. All season. Don't want him to go on loan. Definitely don't want to sell. #LFC

Imagine if Markovic was let go without ever getting a chance in his favoured position, and with Sterling refusing to sign a new deal.
