It seems incredible that there were even suggestions before Liverpool’s win over Villarreal that Daniel Sturridge would not start the match at Anfield.
Sturridge is one of the most injury prone players around but his minutes to goals ratio is hugely impressive and on Thursday night the Liverpool striker produced an imperious performance for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
The Villarreal defence simply could not handle the movement of Sturridge, Adam Lallana and Brazilians Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino.
Sturridge did a lot of the damage, scoring the second goal just after the hour and assisting the third for Adam Lallana in the final minutes.
Unfortunately for Sturridge, it appears that he missed all the celebrations in the Liverpool dressing room after the 3-1 aggregate win over the Spanish side.
Sturridge posted a video on Instagram after the game, where he came back to an empty Liverpool dressing room.
The England striker seemed rather chuffed with his evening’s work, singing to camera to celebrate with his fans on social media.
Liverpool will now play Sevilla in Basel, in their second cup final of the season. Victory over the two-time winners (in consecutive seasons) in the Europa League final would send the Merseyside giants to the Champions League next season.
Before then, Liverpool face home matches against Watford and Chelsea before an away match at West Brom on the final day of the Premier League season.
