Alaves 1 – Real Madrid 2
After losing 1-0 to Real Betis in midweek, Real Madrid could not afford to drop further La Liga points at Alaves on Saturday.
Especially with Barcelona motoring away at the top of the La Liga table.
In the end, there was a surprise match winner for Real Madrid: Dani Ceballos.
The young Spanish midfielder scored twice in the first half to bag three much needed points for Real Madrid.
Real Madrid’s win leaves them four points behind Barcelona – who play against Girona on Saturday night.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s frustrating afternoon at Alaves
After serving a five-game suspension, the whole world expected Cristiano Ronaldo to return to Real Madrid action and bang in the goals.
So far, it has not gone that way at all.
In midweek, Ronaldo played the full 90 minutes but failed to score as Real Madrid lost 1-0 at home to Real Betis.
On Saturday, Ronaldo again played the complete match yet again failed to score, despite plenty of efforts on goal.
Did Cristiano Ronaldo dive v Alaves?
One clip is starting to do the rounds on social media after the Real Madrid win at Alaves.
It features Ronaldo falling over in the area with not a single touch from any Alaves defenders.
Ronaldo is jostling for position on a cross into the box, which Real Madrid are defending (!) and appears to run into Alaves’ Daniel Torres.
See the breakdown of the supposed dive in three pictures below:
Does it matter if Cristiano Ronaldo dives?
It seems fair to say that Cristiano Ronaldo was simply trying to gain an advantage in this incident, and might even have felt a foul in a crowded penalty area.
Ronaldo has dived before and it wouldn’t be a massive surprise if he does so again.
The Ronaldo dive claims – some of them can be seen below – are simply a way of putting down one of the finest players of this generation.
And, the complaints often come from Leo Messi supporters – who has a reputation for never diving.
We have said it before but it bears worth repeating – enjoy both Cristiano Ronaldo and Leo Messi whilst they are still playing.
It seems likely we will never see the likes of Ronaldo and Messi again!
