After Marcus Rashford, it’s Jurgen Klopp vs UK government: Liverpool boss shames UK handling of Covid-19 crisis

Man United’s Marcus Rashford vs UK government

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford continues to attract headlines following his victory against the UK government last week.

Rashford successfully forced the UK government to reverse a decision on providing free meals for underprivileged schoolchildren during the Covid-19 crisis.

The Man United striker used his social media account to pressure UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson into changing his position on the issue.

In the Sunday Times, reporter Jonathan Northcroft has summed up Rashford’s political achievements:

Marcus Rashford calls football his “day job” but appears to have developed a sideline nobody else, in these troubled times, can pull off: uniting his nation and spreading love… The 22-year-old, when he’s ready, should do Johnson’s job.

Jurgen Klopp vs Boris Johnson: Liverpool boss shames UK handling of Covid-19 crisis

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has opened a fresh line of attack against the UK government this weekend.

In his pre-game presser before the Merseyside derby at Everton, Klopp opened up about his thoughts on the UK’s handling of the Covid-19 crisis.

Rather than avoiding the political minefield, the Liverpool manager issued a damning rebuke of Boris Johnson’s record during the global pandemic:

I was not worried for one second that the government could cost us the title because I was worried about a lot of people and the numbers who were dying — and I am still worried.

Honestly, I am a sportsperson and I don’t want to say what I really think about the situation because it would open a Pandora’s box.

I didn’t vote for this government — that’s my excuse. This government was the choice of other people.

The problem I had was that I got the news from England and the news from Germany. If aliens looked at us both from the outside they would think we came from two different planets.

I don’t understand why we started [in Britain] wearing face masks in closed areas like shops on June 15 and not five or six weeks ago when all the other countries were doing it.

All countries who started wearing face masks earlier have better, smaller casualty numbers than here in England. That’s the truth. When I go to the petrol station here in England I am the only one wearing a face mask and I’m the only one with gloves — and I feel like an alien.
