Social media reacts to ‘vintage Liverpool’ first-half versus Newcastle

Viewers of this afternoon’s clash between Newcastle United and Liverpool have taken to social media to poke fun at the Reds, following  a ‘vintage’ first-half performance.

Attacking potency

The two sides went head-to-head in a Premier League matchup at St. James’ Park, with Liverpool looking to recover following a run of just one win from their last six games in all competitions.

Jurgen Klopp’s men looked the superior side from the off, playing some impressive football, as the front four of Sadio Mane, Philippe Coutinho, Mohamed Salah and Danny Sturridge looked typically dangerous.

And it was unsurprisingly one of the aforementioned stars who opened the scoring, as Coutinho cut in from the left to bend the most magnificent of efforts past the helpless Rob Elliot in the home side’s goal.

It was a truly brilliant strike from the Brazilian magician, though the manner in which the Reds proceeded to concede six minutes later perfectly summed up their season thus far.

Laughable defending

Following a Liverpool attack breaking down on the edge of Newcastle’s box, one slide-rule pass from Jonjo Shelvey set Magpies striker Joselu clean through on the edge of the centre-circle, with the central defensive partnership of Joel Matip and Dejan Lovren left in no man’s land.

The former did catch up with the breaking Joselu as he entered their box, but could only kick the ball off of the shin of the Spanish striker before watching it roll agonisingly past the faultless Simon Mignolet.

Reaction

Viewers could not help but take note of how eerily similar the scenario looked to a number of Liverpool’s fixtures to start the campaign, and took to social media in their numbers to take aim at the Merseysiders:
